Menomonee Falls: lake water or village wells?

Menomonee Falls runs two water supplies, and nothing you can see from the curb tells you which one feeds your house. Here is how to find out, and why the answer matters before you buy a softener or change one.

What the two supplies are

Part of the village runs on Lake Michigan water supplied by Milwaukee Water Works, while the rest runs on water from the Village's own wells. The Village of Menomonee Falls water utility manages both, and every home on its system gets one or the other.

On hardness they sit far apart. The Village gives the lake water as 7 to 9 grains per gallon and its well water as 27 to 32, so a house on the wells lives with roughly four times the hardness of one on lake water.

The surest answer: ask the Village with your address

Supply follows the address, and the Village utility runs both systems, so it is the office that can say. Give it your street address and ask one plain question: lake water or village wells?

Keep the answer where you can find it. It is the first thing a softener quote in this village needs.

Clues that do not settle it

A neighbor's answer belongs to the neighbor, since supply follows the address. The softener already in your basement is no proof either: its setting tells you what someone once assumed about your water, not which supply actually arrives.

Spotting will not tell you. Hard water leaves spots and film on glass and fixtures, both supplies carry hardness, and a spotted glass cannot say whether the water behind it was 8 grains or 30.

The reading that confirms it on install day

Before any plumbing is touched, the plumber checks the hardness coming out of your tap. With the two ranges this far apart, a result near 7 to 9 grains means lake water and a result near 27 to 32 means the wells.

The softener is set from that result. After the work, the same tap is checked again, as often as needed, until it shows zero.

Bring the answer to the call

If you know your supply, say it first. If you do not, your street address is enough to start the quote, and the reading on the day settles any doubt.

Common questions

Can two houses near each other get different water?

Supply is assigned by address, so treat a neighbor's answer as theirs and ask about your own. The Village utility can tell you.

Does the answer change what I would buy?

No. Either supply gets the same package: the softener, the brine tank and the kitchen RO faucet. The answer changes how the softener is sized and the hardness it is set for.

Is it worth knowing my supply if I never plan to soften?

Yes. A 7 to 9 grain supply and a 27 to 32 grain supply are very different, and the answer tells you which one you are living with.
