Moving to Menomonee Falls: what to ask about a house's water
A new address in Menomonee Falls comes with one of two very different waters. A few questions before or soon after the move tell you which one, and whether the softener in the basement matches it.
Call (262) 829-5961Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pmWhich supply comes with the house
The Village delivers either Lake Michigan water at 7 to 9 grains or water from its own wells at 27 to 32, and the address decides which. Ask the Village utility with the street address; the seller may not know, and a listing may not say.
Of everything here, that answer matters most, because it tells you how hard the water at every tap will be.
What the softener in the basement is set for
If the house comes with a softener, ask the seller what hardness it is set to, or look for the setting on the unit. A setting near 30 grains fits the village wells; one near 8 fits the lake side.
If the setting and the supply do not match, write both down. That pairing is exactly what the quote call will want to hear about.
Where water enters the house
Find the pipe that brings water into the house; the softener goes beside it. Depending on the house, that pipe surfaces in the basement, in a utility room or in the garage. A softener stands at that point, so it is the spot the call will ask about, along with whether a drain and power are within reach.
If the lot has its own well
A house that draws from a private well on its lot, instead of a Village connection, falls outside both published figures. Ask the seller for any lab report on the well and note when the sample was taken.
For any private well, the Wisconsin DNR advises checking it for bacteria no less than once a year. Neither bacteria nor nitrate is something a softener is built to treat, which is why the well test keeps its own calendar no matter what you decide about softening.
The first call from your new address
Once you are in, one call gets you a price, weekdays between 7am and 5pm. Bring the supply answer, the old softener's setting if you found it, how many people will live there and where the main line enters, plus any well report.
Common questions
Should we keep the seller's softener?
That is your call. Find out which supply the house gets and what the softener is set for; if the two agree and the water suits you, there may be nothing to change.
Do the same questions apply in Lannon or Butler?
Mostly, but the supply question goes to whoever serves that village, or to the lab report if the property has a private well. The Menomonee Falls figures are not theirs.
